Bobby Hill and Friends!

December 31, 2017 (New Year’s Eve) | 4:00 pm | Tickets on sale now!

Bobby Hill RehearsingThe Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will host “Bobby Hill & Friends! A Family New Year’s Eve” at 4:00 pm on December 31, 2017. All proceeds will benefit the endARTSlessness campaign, for which Hill is the spokesperson. The initiative seeks to ensure that every school in our region has at least one arts program that can serve as a lifeline to lift young people up and out of creative poverty.

Hill became an overnight sensation when he performed for the Holy Father and millions of others around the world at a live, 2015 televised performance on the Parkway in honor of the pontiff. With a moment’s notice, due to an unexpected set change, Hill sang a glorious, a cappella rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu.” Webber himself praised the rendition as “simply stunning.” The evening’s emcee, actor Mark Wahlberg, declared Hill to have the “voice of an angel,” and since then he has been known as “the boy who sang for the Pope.”

“When Bobby captured the attention of Pope Francis and the world, he was a boy soprano,” says Steve Fisher, Founder and the Artistic Director of Commonwealth Youthchoirs, the organization presenting the concert. “Two years later, he is a young man and a breathtaking tenor. Mother Nature was kind enough to let Bobby keep his very special solo voice even as she dropped it an octave or two.” Hill notes, “Too bad the Holy Father will not be there this time. But there will be some very special guests who will help make the evening memorable.”

The fledgling New Jersey Boychoir will make its debut at this charity event. The Archbishop Carroll High School’s Choir will also take part. Also appearing will be the Find Your Instrument! Choir at Lingelbach Elementary School. Find Your Instrument! is one of six programs of Commonwealth Youthchoirs (CY), which seeks to transform the lives of young people through the power of making music together. Other programs of CY include Keystone State Boychoir, of which Bobby is a member, Pennsylvania Girlchoir, New Jersey Boychoir, Garden State Girlchoir, and Good Mornin’ Music!.

“Find Your Instrument! is the program in the organization that is nearest and dearest to my heart,” says Fisher. “We partner with schools that otherwise would have no singing. We make sure the halls are alive with the sound of music, and that young people can discover the joy of being part of a choir. Sometimes that discovery can transform their lives forever. Just ask Bobby!” Hill wonders, “Who knows what my life would be like had I not been given the opportunity to discover my love for music?”

The fateful day Bobby sang for the Pope launched an intercontinental singing tour which continues to this day, in venues that range from local prisons to 5-star hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia. Among his many appearances, he has performed at the Ebony Gala, where he was named one of the 100 most influential African Americans. Another highlight was being invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber as his personal guest at the opening of the Broadway show School of Rock.

It will all come full circle when Bobby goes to Rome to sing for the Holy Father at the Vatican, which Fisher anticipates. “The Pope may be surprised at how deep my voice has gotten,” says Hill. “Singing for him was awesome, but the most important thing to me is to be able to keep sharing my love of singing to help bring music to others – especially those who might not have it in their lives.” Hill plans to contribute some of the money he has raised through singing to the Holy Father’s “Peter’s Pence” fund.

“You’ll definitely want to be there when Bobby introduces his new voice to the world on December 31st,” says Fisher. “You’ll be able to say, ‘I heard him then.’ And you’ll be able to say you helped endARTSlessness in our area.”

Bobby sings at Queen Takeover

Queen Takeover: Consecration Mass to Our Lady

Sunday, October 8, 2017 | Mass begins at 6:30 pm
Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103

When you need something done, you ask someone who gives a bold yes. Mary’s yes led to Jesus, the one who ultimately satisfies our desires.

And that’s why we’re asking Mary to takeover.

Archbishop Chaput will dedicate the youth & young adults in Philadelphia to Mary, a woman whose courage changed the world.

Those who ask, receive – and we’re asking for it all. The Queen Takeover will be a Mass like we know it, but with a little extra hustle.

Because when you need something done right, you ask Mary.

Ike Ndolo, along with renowned vocalist Bobby Hill, the “voice of an angel” who performed on stage for Pope Francis at the Festival of Families during the Holy Father’s visit to Philadelphia in September 2015, will lead the music.

Reserve seats (free) here.

Philadelphia Tribune staff writer Bobbi Booker caught up with Bobby the week before Christmas and reported on his latest success, the release of his holiday CD, My Best for Him – A Bobby Hill Christmas. The article, “Life for pope singer Bobby Hill includes top-selling holiday CD,” begins:

Local choir boy Bobby Hill had not planned for a solo presentation in 2015 for Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Families Festival in Philadelphia.

Hill, had already sang with the Keystone[state] Boys Choir[sic], and after their performance, their director was asked to pick a vocalist to entertain for a one-minute break.

Within moments, Hill delivered an impromptu a capella rendition of Pie Jesu. Upon conclusion, he gave the Pope a rock from Antarctica – a gift on behalf of his choir plucked from the ground during a trip with the group in 2009.

The Pope smiled and gave him a blessed rosary. Actor Mark Wahlberg, serving as the event host, immediately lauded Hill as “the voice of an angel.”

Bobby Hill: Philadelphia Magazine We Want Answers

Bobby was the subject of the December 1o, 2016 feature We Want Answers by Victor Fiorillo. Among the questions:

I detect a slightly deeper voice than when you sang for Pope Francis last year. Are you still a soprano? I am. I can still hit a high C. When my voice does change, I’ll sing through it, and hopefully I’ll have a nice tenor voice on the other side.

Aside from your overnight celebrity, what has been the biggest change since we spoke with you last year?
I left Central and am now doing school through Philadelphia Virtual Academy, which is run by the school district. It’s about five and a half hours a day, and I still meet up with my friends after school and on weekends. I don’t see a downside. It allows me to travel and perform.

From Yahoo News, National Reporter Jason Sickels caught the mood at the opening of the Democratic National Convention, June 25, in Philadelphia:

Bobby Hill singing at DNC opening

Boos and backlash over a new email scandal overshadowed the Democratic National Convention’s unity theme Monday, but once the event kicked off, delegates found a common cause to cheer: young singer Bobby Hill’s soaring rendition of the national anthem.

The 14-year-old Philadelphia boy brought hundreds of delegates to their feet Monday with his flawless performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Minutes after some in the contentious crowd interrupted the opening prayer with shouts of “Bernie, Bernie,” the sweetly smiling soprano unified the Wells Fargo Center with his pitch-perfect performance.

It wasn’t Hill’s first time to wow a national audience. Last September, the teen found fame after a last-minute solo for Pope Francis during the pontiff’s visit to Philadelphia.

“That was truly the voice of an angel,” actor Mark Wahlberg told Hill after hearing him perform an a cappella version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu” for the pope.

Ebony magazine put him on its 2015 Power 100 honorees’ list spotlighting “the heroes of the black community.”

The young performer is a member of the Keystone State Boychoir, a group of 200 young men ages 8 to 18 who sing a diverse selection of music.

Hill, dressed in a suit and tie, confidently strolled onto the DNC stage Monday afternoon and nailed the national anthem.
