Bobby HillBobby Hill will perform Saturday with the Festival Mozaic Orchestra at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo as part of Festival Mozaic. The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on the event on July 19

Writer James Cushing notes:

Central Coast music lovers have two serious reasons to be happy about Festival Mozaic, which celebrates its 46th anniversary this summer.

Saturday marks the local debut of one of the most exciting young performers in the classical world as he tackles an ambitious work of music rarely heard live on the Central Coast.

Boy soprano Bobby Hill will join the Festival Mozaic Orchestra at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo to perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G major. Expectations are running very high.

So, who’s Hill, what’s Mahler’s Fourth Symphony and what brings them together?

KYW Newsradio’s Mark Abrams was at the Philadelphia Auto Show on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 when Pope Francis’ Fiats arrived in the main exhibit hall, with Bobby riding in the passenger seat used by the Pope.

According to Abrams, “Sitting in the passenger seat of the car, grooving to Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen,’ was Philadelphia’s Papal performer Bobby Hill.

“Just amazing and it was like a nice bow to the end of the Papal visit and being able to be in the car,” Bobby said. “I looked back and said that’s where the Pope sat, that’s where the Pope sat. Yeah, it was great.”

Philadelphia’s NBC10 was at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 to cover the opening of the Philadelphia Auto Show – and Bobby arrived in one of the featured rides. A report on NBCPhiladelphia.com noted, “Philadelphia car enthusiasts rejoice, the big stars of the Philadelphia Auto Show arrived at the Pennsylvania Convention Center Wednesday with the help of some local celebrities.”

“Bishop Shanahan High School band director Chuck Keating drove the special Fiat 500L while singer Bobby Hill sat, and waved, from the passenger seat — the spot where Pope Francis sat. Keating’s son Michael, who has cerebral palsy, was blessed by the pope upon his arrival to the City of Brotherly Love and Bobby Hill famously serenaded the pontiff on the Ben Franklin Parkway.”

2014's preconcert cocktail party (Philly.com)

2014’s preconcert cocktail party (Philly.com)

Winter Storm Jonas brought one of the biggest snow accumulations in Philadelphia history, and one of the casualties was the 159th Academy Ball, where Bobby Hill was featured on the bill with comedian Martin Short and The Philadelphia Orchestra. In Critic’s Notebook on Philly.com, Inquirer Classical Music Critic Peter Dobrin noted reasons to mourn the cancellation. After considering the Ball’s history and reasons it continues to be held, and changes made recently, he noted:

“…In past years, the Academy Ball Book has looked like a testament to patrimony. The few African American faces in it have been mostly musicians or students or recipients of charity. Greater thought must be given to the kind of special guest the Academy imports for the concert. We don’t know what kind of jollity, charm, or talent Martin Short might have brought, and finding creative types who can both sell tickets and offer artistic substance is a tall order. Boy soprano Bobby Hill was to have sung this year, a nice touch if it had happened.”

Called “the voice of an angel,” 14-year-old singing sensation Bobby Hill, one of Ebony Magazine’s 2015 Power 100, has released a new single, “O Holy Night”. The single, which Philadelphia Magazine claims will “put a little spark back into the holiday-tune listening experience,” is featured on his website BobbyWHill.com for free download and Soundcloud.com/BobbyWHill/o-holy-night to stream.

Hill’s meteoric rise began several months ago, following an impromptu a cappella performance of “Pie Jesu” during Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia. Since then, Bobby has traveled across the globe, and was featured at the Ebony Power 100 gala in Los Angeles on December 2. The Ebony Power 100 is an annual list that recognizes those making major strides in the African-American community.

Hill’s single coincides with several upcoming live performances, including a performance of his new single on the Fox and Friends morning show on Monday, December 14, and at Philadelphia’s ‘A Soulful Christmas,’ Tuesday, December 15 at Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall. Hill is one of several scheduled performances that will include also ‘The Queen of Gospel” Shirley Caesar. Bobby gives his own special holiday gift with “O Holy Night” featured on his website BobbyWHill.com for free download, and plans to close out the winter season with a benefit concert on February 29, 2016 at a location to be revealed in the coming weeks.
